The Challenge:

To provide employees of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains and Ponidzie landscape parks with a geospatial mapping capability that can inventory and spatially visualize the natural, ethnographic, historical, and cultural resources associated with the parks.

The Impact:

Implementation of geospatial capabilities to visualize, inventory, and manage landscape park assets and connect geospatial capabilities to data from disparate sources: imagery, park databases, and mapping data of the region. To utilize geospatial technology to support the goal of sustainable development and preserving and popularizing the natural, historical and cultural assets of the region.

The Outcome:

GISonLine successfully developed and implemented a web-based mapping application that connected to a centralized database and used commercially available imagery and data. The geospatial mapping capability enabled park employees to view, inventory, edit, and store landscape park assets. The mapping application also provided a public facing interface for site visitors to visualize the landscape region and its natural / historical features. Benefits of the solution included:

  • Providing landscape data to a wide audience
  • Access to multimedia data, photos, and imagery
  • Enterprise data editing via centralized database
  • Communication & presentation of park protection plans

Client: Exact
Location: Bad Bevensen, Germany

The objectives of this project were to create a comprehensive digital visualization using 3D models of the aboveground and belowground infrastructure covering an area of planned construction of an industrial facility in Bad Bevensen, Germany.

The Impact:

The GISonLine Underground Detection Team acquired Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements and inspection data for the underground infrastructure survey covering an area of more than 12,000 m². In addition, point-cloud data from the terrestrial laser scanner and imagery from the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) were used to collect high-resolution data for the above ground structures.

The Outcome:

Together with our survey partner (EXACT), GISonLine successfully surveyed the project site using GPR underground detection methods. The underground detection data was used to establish a detailed 3D model of the underground assets.

The sub-surface data was then combined with the aboveground datasets collected from the laser scanning and UAV imagery to form a comprehensive 3D model and representation of the construction site.

Deliverables associated with this project included:

  • Inventory of underground infrastructure (GPR measurements)
  • Creation of digital maps of the above and below ground infrastructure
  • Development of 3D models
  • Delivery of the data obtained from the GPR, UAV, and laser scanning

Overview

GISonLine supported the project for the implementation of the Integrated Network Asset Management System at Energa Operator SA (independent distribution system operator).  Primary focus was to migrate utilities inventory and asset data from Energa Operator legacy asset management system (GE Smallworld) to the targeted Esri ArcGIS environment. A key component of the project was to ensure the data migration process adheres to data integrity, completeness, and supports continuity of business operations.

The Impact

With emphasis on continuity of business operations and workflows, transitioning the data from the legacy data model to the new geodatabase model focused on successful migration of Energa Operator’s electrical distribution lines and utility objects to include:

  • 40,000 km of utility network
  • 11 thousand stations
  • 400 thousand utility poles
  • 600 thousand connectors

The Outcome

GISonLine setup a data migration strategy, methodology, and set of transformation software tools to guide the migration process to successful completion with quality control checks. The method utilized ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) class software and ensured the data migration process could be repeatable for subsequent data migrations between the legacy and Esri environment.

ESRI ArcGIS

Overview

GISonLine participated in the implementation of one of the largest projects in Poland Energy & Utilities markets carried out by Taruon Dystrybucja SA and concerning the process of passporting and inventorying of the power grid.  The primary focus of the project was to collect and establish an inventory of utility network assets and their attributes that contain precise information about the technical parameters of individual utility network objects, their relationship with other objects, and their geographical location. Project challenges included:

  • Diversity of data ranging from the 1950’s to modern as-built documentation
  • Multiple coordinates systems associated with source data
  • High network density with large amount of source data features
  • Requires specialized knowledge of the energy industry

The Impact:

Multiple sources of data and information were collected and processed and entered into the geospatial system to form a single source of knowledge regarding the utility assets. The sources included: paper documentation, topographic maps, land surveys, and data collected in the field during the inventory and assessment process.

The Outcome:

Using the obtained source data and information, GISonline successfully conducted an inventory of Low and Medium Voltage networks covering a total length of over 5,000 kilometers. All datasets were processed, formatted, and entered into the digital database that supports the geospatial system for the visualization and management of utility network assets.

Overview

Keeping utility assets up-to-date within a geospatial system while constant changes and modernization of the utility network occurs is a challenge.  The goal of this project was to formalize business processes and streamline workflows associated with data maintenance of Tauron Distribution Integrated Network Asset Management System.

The Impact

The project require excellent knowledge of the energy distribution industry and the structure of assets within electrical power grids.  During the process of GISonLine assessing the utilities data, gaps in information about utility devices were identified and corrected.  Secure remote access was established that allowed GISonLine geospatial technicians and data managers to connect directly to Tauron’s geospatial system to implement the data management workflows.

The Outcome

GISonLine successfully integrated a set of processes and workflows designed to support the input and management of utility network data directly within Tauron’s geospatial system. In addition, GISonLine identified, documented, and corrected gaps in the utilities infrastructure data to support a complete and holistic view of the enterprise network.

Introduction of the formalized processes and workflows included:

  • Standardizing the data entry process during stages of development
  • Performing verification and completeness checks of the asset data
  • Validation of the technical documentation accuracy and completeness
