Business challenge

Client: Miasto Rybnik

Rybnik is one of the major cities in the Silesian Voivodeship (Poland), with a population of approximately 130,000. The local authorities are actively developing municipal infrastructure and undertaking initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life, with stormwater management linked to both areas.

The municipality of Rybnik lacked complete documentation for a portion of the stormwater network located within the city, part of which is managed by the municipality and is part classified as “abandoned property” — lacking legal ownership status and, consequently, not maintained. To enable proper rainwater management and support new investments, the local government commissioned a detailed inventory and mapping of this section of the sewer network, an evaluation of its technical condition, and an update of the basemaps.

Outcome & Impact

We conducted a comprehensive inventory of the stormwater sewer system for more than 7,300 linear meters of network across over a dozen of streets in the city of Rybnik.

Our work included:

  • Field inventory of all system components (collectors, inspection chambers, street inlets, lateral connections)
  • CCTV inspection of the network using multimedia cameras
  • Preparation of geodetic documentation with correction of inaccurately mapped routes on basemaps
  • Development of detailed summaries and inventory sheets for all infrastructure components
  • Establishment of building structure logbooks for the inventoried sections of the network

Technologies & Methodst

  • CCTV cameras enabling inspection and recording
  • Direct geodetic measurement. The situational survey was carried out using the RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) method with a Leica receiver. Elevation data was obtained through geometric leveling using a Leica Sprinter leveler.
  • Underground survey using specialized detection equipment for the precise location of underground utilities, including Leica Ultra and RD8100 detectors, as well as the Leica DS2000 Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
  • Software for spatial data processing and visualization (SHP, dxf)
  • Technical infrastructure classification and evaluation systems

Benefits for the Client

  • Comprehensive information about the infrastructure within the area of their governance – detailed data on location and technical condition of 7,300 linear metres of the stormwater sewer system
  • Complete and accurate documentation – a foundation for preparing valuation reports and regularizing the legal status of “abandoned property”
  • Up-to-date spatial data – corrected base maps and data integrated into the Rybnik Municipal Spatial Information System
  • Solid planning foundations – enabling effective investment planning and maintenance work based on reliable data
